Audi, Mazda Win Big At World Car Of the Year Awards

The Audi R8 Coupe and Mazda MX-5 sped off with global victories at the World Car of the Year Awards.

The MX-5 certainly stole the spotlight. It became the first Japanese car to win in the Design category. The Mazda CX-3 was also a finalist in that category.  It also became the first and only car to ever win in two categories: World Design of the year and World Car of the Year. The winners were announced at the New York International Car show.

The Audi A4 was a finalist in the latter category. The German automaker did not leave the show empty-handed.  This year, the Audi R8 Coupe rolled away with the World Performance Car award. It comes from a line of vehicles that won the 24 Hours of Le Mans 13 times since 2000; is it that much of a surprise?

While an honor, this is not Audi’s first time around the track when it comes to World Car Award wins. The victories include
some of the following:

  • World Car of the Year in 2005 and 2014
  • World Performance Car for 2008 and 2007,
  • 2008 and 2007 World Car Design of the Year awards.

This most recent win marks the 8th, making Audi the most

successful model in the history of the World Car awards.

Reaching these decisions is truly an international effort: A panel of 73 automotive journalists from 23 countries around the world come together and makes the final decision. Each person is appointed by the World Car Steering Committee based on factors like their expertise, experience, and influence. They typically drive and evaluate new vehicles on a regular basis as part of their professional work.

The New York International Auto Show started on March 25th. It ends on April 3rd. #1 Cochran congratulates both Mazda and Audi for their big wins!
