VW Golf Named Car of the Year for 2015
The automotive industry has many awards and accolades, which are universally recognized by all car manufacturers, but the crème de la crème is the honor of being dubbed North American Car of the Year. Winners are selected based on expert analysis and a wide range of criteria from 57 jurors representing dozens of print, online, and broadcast operations. This year’s North American Car of the Year: the 2015 Volkswagen Golf.
Finalists are selected to represent their vehicle category and are judged according to their unique segment, not compared to one another. The award is meant to “honor new benchmarks in their automotive segments in areas ranging from design and safety to innovation and value for the dollar.”
This year’s finalists included some stiff competition for the Golf. The pre-award favorite, Ford’s all-new 2015 Mustang, was expected to win the award by many analysts. A newly designed Hyundai Genesis was also turning heads as a potential winner. In the end, it was the VW Golf’s attention to detail and simplified design which ultimately captured the attention of the jurors.
As stated by many regarding the Golf, “the devil is in the details”. One juror noted that the Golf’s “exquisite execution of lines and surface” appealed to both younger and more mature demographics. Jurors felt the 2015 VW Golf best embodied the essence of the North American Car of the Year award as Volkswagen addressed all areas of the vehicle’s performance, safety, and fuel economy (36 mpg combined) while also creating an aesthetically enjoyable and practical driving experience.
